The goal of Shelby County School English as a Second Language (ESL) program is to help English Language Learners learn English so that they will be able to meet age appropriate academic standards for grade promotion and graduation. It is anticipated that students will continue in an English language development program for 3 years or until they're able to successfully transition to a full day schedule that is not tailored for limited English proficient students.
At Raleigh-Bartlett Meadows Elem. School, the method of ESL instruction is pullout service. In pullout service, student leaves his/her English-only classroom during the day for ESL instruction. Instruction is provided in English only and adapted to the student’s needs and strengths.
Beginning the school year of 2014-2015, we are adopting Journeys Common Core. Through Journeys, skill reinforcement in ESL classes is provided using quality instructional materials and proven effective instructional strategies, so that students can adequately and easily acquire required literacy skills.
Also this school year, we are adopting World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment or WIDA.
