Week of Sept. 7
Lesson 3
Reading Text: CATS Genre: Informational
Summary of the text
Cats make fun pets. But they need the right food, plenty of water, a safe indoor environment, and daily playtime to be healthy and happy. Although most cats can clean and groom themselves, long-haired cats need to be brushed. A visit to the vet will help a sick cat get well soon.
I CAN statements:
I can produce, expand and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences.
I can use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify meanings of words and phrases.
I can identify real-life connections between words and their use.

Week of August 31
Lesson 2: Birthdays Around the World Genre: Informational
Summary of the text:
This selection discusses birthday customs around the world: special birthday foods in china, india, and Ghana; the German origin of cakes with candles; birthday parties in general; and special birthdays, such as the ones for 15-year-old Mexican girls. The selection ends with a map highlighting the various countries mentioned.
I CAN statements: I can compare and contrast objects and ideas.
Vocabulary Center: Find the guide words for each vocabulary word.
Writing Center: Write a paragraph that answers the question below.
Which of the birthday parties described in the book would you like to attend? What things would you do there? What foods would you eat? Use details from this book in your answer.
